George P. Harbison is a senior finance executive, having held the position of Chief Financial Officer for several companies in the hospitality and higher education industries over the past 25 years. Over the course of his career, Mr. Harbison has managed buy-side and sell-side business transactions totaling over $600 million.
In his role as a financial executive, Mr. Harbison has attained a deep understanding of federal and state tax matters. He has utilized this knowledge to analyze, dissect, and refute popularly-held but fallacious tax assertions.
In 2013, Mr. Harbison wrote a piece for Forbes.com which completely debunked Warren Buffett’s famous and politically-charged assertion that his federal tax rate was well below the rate paid by his lower-paid office workers. Since then, his tax myth-busting articles have appeared in Forbes.com, RealClearMarkets.com, and RealClearPolitics.com, where he has taken on Buffett, the Obama Administration, Rachel Maddow, and Steven Rattner. Earlier articles of his appeared on the “American Thinker” website.
Mr. Harbison’s Forbes.com essay on Warren Buffett was included in the book, Excuse Me Professor, Challenging the Myths of Progressivism, co-edited by the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE), and Young America’s Foundation (YAF). He has also appeared twice as a guest on The Larry Elder Show.
In 2013, YAF asked Mr. Harbison to present a lecture on basic tax principles at its “Road to Freedom” seminar at the Reagan Ranch Center in Santa Barbara, CA. Mr. Harbison subsequently delivered this presentation at two other YAF seminars in Santa Barbara and at several universities across the country. His lecture at Clemson University was sponsored by YAF, FEE, and the Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism.
In 2016, at the request of a YAF student leader, Mr. Harbison created and delivered a presentation titled “The Victims of Socialism” at the University of California, Riverside. This presentation was subsequently delivered at the University of Notre Dame, the University of Michigan, McGill University, Clemson University, Lafayette College, the University at Buffalo, and the University of Southern California. Mr. Harbison’s lectures on this topic have been co-sponsored by YAF and the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation.
Mr. Harbison received a BA from Kenyon College in 1976, where he majored in physics. He continued his education at the University of Michigan, where he received a Master’s of Business Administration (emphasis in finance and accounting) in 1978.
Mr. Harbison resides in Mission Viejo, CA. He serves as the on-field announcer of the games played by the Miracle League of Orange County, a baseball league for special-needs children and young adults.
