In a violation of free speech, Des Moines Community College student and YAF chapter president Jake Dagel was shut down by campus police for violating school solicitation protocol today.DagelFlier

As we reported first yesterday, Dagel, who chairs the school’s Young Americans for Freedom chapter, is opposing the 8th Annual Governor’s Conference on LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning) Youth and is calling for the school to pull its $1,000 sponsorship during a press conference announcing his chapter’s position. Dagel exposed that conservatives and Christians will be bullied at the event. The event will have a panel that will show attendees how to fight back against “right-wing bias” called “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Right Wing.”Another is a seminar that will have attendees watch the documentary “For the Bible Tells Me So,” a documentary that shows how conservatives have “warped” their interpretation of the Bible to stigmatize homosexuals.

Dagel told Young America’s Foundation this afternoon:

“My friend, who is not a DMACC student, and myself where
passing out the attached flyer to students. After about 20 minutes
a campus security officer came up to me, handed me a copy of the
school’s policy on solicitation and escorted me to the student
activities office. I was told I hold my
first amendment right, but to distribute flyers I had to
have a table which required a two week notice and approval by the

This sounds eerily similar to a YAF chapter at Palm Beach State College that experienced the exact same type of anti-free speech behavior. In 2010, college officials denied Young Americans for
members permission to distribute Heritage Foundation literature
at a student organization fair and also prohibited them from
handing out information within the “free speech zones” on several
PBSC campuses. The officials cited PBSC’s speech policies as their

Also today, Dagel and 16 state legislators and various pastors held a press conference this morning to object to the conference. Their statement is below:

Based on our desire and commitment to be faithful stewards of
our tax dollars, we cannot in good conscience vote to give taxpayer
dollars to people or groups who pervert the Bible, teach our youth
to engage in dangerous behavior, and target individuals like Jan
Mickelson for hatred and bullying.

We have proof that the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC)
Diversity Commission is using tuition and taxpayer monies to
sponsor the Governors LGBTQ Youth Conference, as a result of
information obtained by the DACC Young Americans for Freedom
chapter, through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

Therefore, we Representatives of the people of Iowa, will vote
against appropriations for (DMACC) unless they withhold taxpayer’s
dollars from the Governors LGBTQ Youth Conference.

At the right is a picture of the flier Dagel and his friend tried to hand out. This is a clear violation of Dagel’s first amendment right. We will keep you posted as things develop.
