Google Praises Violent Revolutionist

Thursday, Google’s homepage displayed an image celebrating the birthday of Yuri Kockiyama, a Marxist and one of Malcolm X’s closest companions. According to Google, “Kochiyama left a legacy of advocacy: for peace, U.S. political prisoners, nuclear disarmament, and reparations for Japanese Americans interned during the war. She was known for her tireless intensity and compassion, and remained committed to speaking out, consciousness-raising, and taking action until her death in 2014”. However, when you click on the image, you’re directed to a very different narrative of Kockiyama’s life. While Google paints Kockiyama as a peace-loving woman, her Wikipedia entry points out that she was influenced by Marxism and Maoism,  Malcolm X, and other radical leaders who promoted peace through fear and acts of violence. According to the Black Book of Communism, published by Harvard University Press, Marxism and Maoism have killed more than 100 million people throughout history. When Kockiyama was interviewed by The Objector in 2003 she said, “I consider Osama bin Laden as one of the people that I admire. To me, he is in the category of Malcolm X, Che Guevara, Patrice Lumumba, Fidel Castro, all leaders that I admire.” Kockiyama also joined the Republic of New Africa, a group that aimed to establish a separate black nation in the southern United States. This does not sound like the compassionate activist that Google honored. While they chose to depict her as peaceful leader, her record of radical activism says otherwise. For Google to praise Yuri Kockiyama is deplorable to the Americans who died fighting anti-western regimes and echoes the work of leftist professors across the country who celebrate radicals like Che Guevara and Malcom X, deliberately choosing not to educate students on the real story behind their messages of “peace.”
