Academic Freedom: A Novel Idea

Burbank Unified School District recently decided to remove the classic books To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Of Mice and Men, The Cay, and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry from their curriculum after a few parents alleged that these books encourage racism. The district’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee created a subcommittee to reevaluate the books, and on November 13, 2020, voted to remove all five books – four of which were required reading – from the district’s curriculum. This censorship should not go unchallenged. Students should have access to these important literary works and wrestle with the ideas they contain.

Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are foundational American principles, and Young America’s Foundation rejects attempts to censor materials deemed “politically incorrect” and is committed to ensuring that middle and high school students in the Burbank Unified School District have access to books that encourage intellectual diversity and critical thinking.

Any student currently enrolled in middle or high school in the Burbank Unified School District is eligible to receive a FREE copy of each of the “banned books.”
