  • Tuition Equity Hearing Lacks Diversity

    By: Gabriella Morrongiello

Waking up at the crack of dawn for 8am classes has never been my forte. However, on the morning of the public hearing for the "Tuition Equity" bill, I was out of bed before the first verse of my alarm had even run its course. An hour later I was cruising down I-5 toward the Oregon State Capitol. Upon arrival, I noticed I was not the only student who would be present. Two large charter buses had pulled up and were offloading dozens of Hispanic students. Each bus sported a custom paint job and was adorned with worn out tried and true phrases of the left: "students for equality," "social justice now," "humans aren't illegal." Thirty minutes later the majority of these students and their teachers glared at me, jaws-dropped, as I returned back to my seat following my testimony.

I came to the capitol to testify against Oregon House Bill 2787, better known as "Tuition Equity." This bill proposes in-state tuition for illegal aliens, but fails to extend the same benefit to out-of-state American students. It is, in my opinion, anything but equitable. With my testimony, I hoped to make some rational Oregonians realize this was just another effort on behalf of government officials to work against the people they are elected to serve and instead give comfort and aid to undocumented immigrants.

I was the ONLY student, out of the 100+ in attendance, who testified in opposition to this bill.

The first half hour of the hearing was monopolized by the panel of state representatives publicly addressing one another as they glorified the bill. This obviated the purpose of a hearing for the public. It quickly became apparent how skewed the hearing would be after a panel in which only three of us would testify in opposition. The 80 minutes that ensued was spent listening to carefully orchestrated and emotionally-appealing testimonials by supporters who clearly left their logic at the door. One Latino student even wore her graduation gown, hoping it would somehow convey her said crushed aspirations upon graduating high school since she would be unable to afford college. In the hearing's last five minutes, the representatives obligatorily rushed an opportunity for three Oregon taxpayers to voice their disdain. How virtuous of them.

At the end of the day, I was thankful for the opportunity to denounce this bill. The irony of the hearing though, is what will voraciously eat away at me over the next few weeks. How could these representatives, who titled the legislation "Tuition Equity" themselves, have staged a public hearing that was anything but equal in the diversity of opinion?

Pardon my French, but Oregon must wake up and smell the bull; House Bill 2787 assists those in this country illegally while leaving law-abiding American citizens to pick up the tab. Now what is equitable about that?

    • I applaud your decision to step up and give the testimony you thought was correct, especially in an environment where you were clearly not the majority. That being said I disagree with the concern you raised about Tuition Equity not being fair for students who were born in America, students like us. We as students are given the opportunity to pay in-state tuition in the various universities that exist in our home states. If you grew up in Oregon it makes sense that you have access to institutions of higher education here. The same is true if you are from California, Montana, or Tennessee since you have access to universities there. That's why I believe that it makes sense to allow undocumented students the opportunity to attend college in the state that they grow up in and call home. I have many friends who are undocumented and I have no doubt of their academic potential as well as their love for this great nation. The way I see it, it's only a matter of time before they become engineers, American citizens and registered voters. By continuing to oppose measures like these the conservative factions of America are turning away future voters. What side of history do you and other conservatives want to be in when this is all in our history books?

    • Julia, you overlook the fact that even though these "students" may have grown up here, they and their families were here ILLEGALLY. You know, as in "breaking the law". These students have MORE opportunities, with this bill, than AMERICANS. They have the option of attending college in their homelands (Mexico, for example, offers a fine and free college education to its citizens) and here, something that AMERICANS do not have the opportunity to do. I've taught overseas in countries poorer than Mexico, and even more corrupt. Illegal immigration is part and parcel of corruption and that alone is reason not to reward it by offering in-state tuition and other benefits to illegal aliens, "children" or not. As for becoming American citizens and voters, they may well wait all their lives for that and never have it come. They've been promised the Dream Act since 2001 and all Obama has done is make sure that they have a comfortable spot in limbo--one which has no guarantee since policy is not law.

    • By the way, Julia, I'm sure you have no problem with the little fact that the PARENTS broke the laws of this country as adults and that these children, adults at age 18, are making the decision to continue breaking the law. Rewarding the children for breaking the law will only encourage more parents to come here illegally.

    • Dear Ms. Morrongiello: I heard you speak at the hearing. I signed up on the first sheet but wasn't called to the front. You are absolutely right and I hope your editorial goes all over campuses across Oregon. Thank you. Lyneil Vandermolen

    • Senators like Lindsay Graham(S.C.) and John, "Americans wouldn't pick lettuce for fifty dolars and hour", McCain, are also traitors to college students who are American citizens. They want Oregon and the rest of the U.S. to be flooded with foreign nationals, ILLEGALLY IN THIS NATION, who will then get affirmative action, special college rates, and other advantages over citizen students. This is rocket science, these politicians are traitors to American citizens. Wake up, smell the coffee, and start behaving like citizens by opposing this treason. Mexico's colleges are free, and that's adding insult to injury, when American students get screwed. THE RECONQUISTA CONTINUES, while Americans sleep, STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES.

    • Those three busses that arrived with the communist leftist slogans, are like a deadly virus, that is spreading and has spread throughout this nation. The far left, which has many many hispanics as members, are essentially OPEN BORDERS, lunatics that are advocating open borders for the U.S. but not for example, Mexico, whose borders they respect. Good God people, wake the FF^&567....up!! Oppose illegal immigration and believe in borders, because you now have both traitorous Republi0CONS, AND the usual traitorous Democ-RATS, advocating for open borders and illegal immigraitioin of people from every conceivable nation on earth. PUT ON YOUR THINKING CAPS, AND BREAK FREE OF THE SOCIALIST COMMUNIST, PHONY HUMMANISM B.S. TAUGHT BY YOUR SICK HIPPY TYPE COMMUNIST COLLEGE PROFESSORS. Remember, they didn't have to compete with illegal aliens when they went to school. HYPOCRITS!!

    • The poster valenzuela, you will note, is making what he/she thinks are sly threats against conservatives, by implying that if the Mexican position, illegal immigration, open borders, isn't taken in every state in the U.S., then conservatives will lose voters. Can you see the impudence and treason in valenzuela's post?? Oregon is sinking fast to the communist, open borders left.

    • The "left" who control colleges and universities across the U.S., has doomed students who are citizens, in favor of illegal foreign nationals, that had no permission to even come here.

    • thank lord someone had the courage to stand up and tell it like it is. my daughter had a great career but thanks to a bunch of mexicans who harrassed her and made no bones about it and no one in the government office she worked wouldnt do anything about it . she finally give up a good career after 5 years on the job and quit and moved clear across the country from where she had lived the biggest part of her life. she hasnt been able to find work so now i scrap as much as i can and send it to her to help her out ive lived amongest them all my life so i got my own program for them. mexicans arent even the largest growing nationality of illegal immigrants now. its the asians who say nothing while quietly infiltrating our nation and livee off the advancements the complaining mexicans manage to get passed in the law area
