RIck Santorum at Yale

By Harry S. Graver, Speaker of the Yale Political Union

Last night, upwards of 1,700 Yalies packed into Woolsey Hall to hear Senator Rick Santorum at the Yale Political Union’s first debate of the year.

In the days leading up to the event, the campus had been buzzing – enthusiasm, excitement, and speculation were high. And the Senator did not disappoint. In front of the largest audience the Yale Political Union has ever had, Senator Santorum delivered a resounding speech in favor of the resolution, “Resolved: Government is Destroying the Family.”

Santorum’s remarks were passionate, engaging, and he was able to intellectually prompt an audience that largely did not share his worldview. Nonetheless, the event was an absolute success, not only during the debate, where the Senator and students traded ideas, but also – and more importantly – for the profound impact his appearance has already had on the campus dialogue. We cannot thank enough Young America’s Foundation and the Wendy McCaw Lecture Series for this opportunity.
