It is not new that college and university administrators are overwhelming liberal. However, what is new is the extreme measures that they are now taking to indoctrinate students with leftist ideas and to suppress conservative thinking. The University of Wisconsin-Madison provides a glimpse into the new tactics the Left is using to coerce students to agree with and advance socialism and censorship under the guise of “social justice.”
As part of its Censorship Exposed! project, YAF sent a public records request to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In response to that request, YAF obtained a copy of the educational materials used in the school’s new “all-student inclusion program” titled, “Our Wisconsin.” This training program is required of all first-year students living on campus.
What “Our Wisconsin” teaches students is shocking!
Students are taught that “social justice” is not only a goal for the university, it is an expectation for student behavior. Specifically, the University describes social justice as –
“…both a process and a goal. The goal of social justice is full and equal participation of all groups in a society that is mutually shaped to meet their needs. Social justice includes a vision of society in which the distribution of resources is equitable and all members are physically and psychologically safe and secure.” (Emphasis added).
Don’t be fooled by the name. “Social justice” has nothing to do with actual justice. “Social justice” is the umbrella term that the Left assigns to its ideological agenda. Leftist ideologues continue to redefine the term to reflect the cause du jour, with each redefinition further left than the last.
Taxpayers in Wisconsin should be concerned for many reasons, not the least of which is that this two-hour workshop is a requirement for students living on campus. “Our Wisconsin” facilitators begin this workshop by instructing students to pair up and to “high-five” each other while discussing college life. Facilitators later instruct students to write down the race, gender, religion and sexual orientation of six people “that have influenced their life.”
“Our Wisconsin” facilitators teach students to believe in a “vision of society in which the distribution of resources is equitable.” This is a flowery way of saying that they are in favor of the redistribution of wealth – socialism.
Instead of teaching students that resources should be redistributed based on a subjective perception of reality – that government is somehow morally justified to steal from some for the benefit others – the University of Wisconsin should teach students that the most efficient and moral way to lift people out of poverty is through free enterprise.
Facilitators also teach students to believe in a society where “all members…are physically and psychologically safe and secure.” The university’s promotion of psychological safety, a.k.a. safe spaces where students need not worry about being offended, as a core value is outrageous.
Universities should be dynamic environments intellectually, where one’s ideas and perceptions are challenged and vetted, not merely affirmed in a safe space. No one has a right not to be offended. Universities should hold the First Amendment as a core value, not censorship.
But a campus-wide safe space appears to be the goal of UW-Madison administrators – a “learning” environment where objective truth is a microaggression, subjectivity reigns, and words are violence. The students at UW-Madison, and certainly Wisconsin taxpayers, deserve better from their university.
