Seriously, who steals a 6 foot by 6 foot replica of the
Berlin Wall?
Yesterday
morning at UNC, the conservative group on campus reported their Berlin Wall
replica missing. The replica was going to be torn down Tuesday night in
celebration of World Freedom Day (i.e., the anniversary of the fall of the
Berlin Wall), but with the wall missing, the festivities were completely
canceled.
The replica was made of cardboard and wood, and cost $60 to
make. There are currently no leads. At the risk of editorializing, it is highly
unlikely that a single person could carry away such a large structure. In other
words, this had to have been a group effort, possibly with nefarious
intentions.
The conservative group’s leader, Anthony Dent, told the
school’s newspaper, the Daily Tarheel: “That’s just kind of sad. After a while,
you kind of get used to putting up with that kind of behavior, but the Berlin Wall
falling should be one of the most [non-polarizing] events in world history.”
Agreed. Freedom Week celebrations have a history of students
with differences joining together to celebrate. Apparently, a select few students
at UNC did not want to participate in a global celebration of freedom. How
unfortunate.
