  • Universities Continue to Break Speech Laws

4/13/2010 2:54:08 PM Posted by Roger Custer

Our friend, David French of the Alliance Defense Fund, who is speaking at the National Conservative Student Conference in August, has a post today on National Review Online questioning why colleges in the Third Circuit continue to defy the law with their speech codes.  Ithaca

One familiar issue to me is the idea of a "bias-related incident" which is always broadly defined by campus administrators.  When I was a student at Ithaca College, the campus newspaper and other freedom-minded students challenged this idea because it violates our right to free speech and allows a committee to decide what can and cannot be said.  Fortunately, the committee was abolished in 2005 and changes were made to the speech policy to allow for constitutional freedoms at Ithaca College.

Unfortunately, similar committees and policies exist on campuses around the country that need to be changed to allow for freedom of speech.

    • I don't think there will ever be another Reagan, but we can hope. We've got Giuliani who is great on fiacsl matters and national security, but a liberal on everything social. Then there is Huckabee who is a compassionate conservative on social issues, but a liberal on immigration enforcement, prison sentences, and he's made some crazy statements about foreign policy. In comes Romney. If there is anyone that can bring together fiacsl conservatives and social conservatives, it has to be Romney. Like Reagan, he changed his position on abortion, but I welcome all converts to the pro-life belief. He's a successful businessman, and at a time when the future of the economy is uncertain, someone with his experience is invaluable. Is he a perfect candidate? Of course not, but those are rare. I'm looking for the best person for the job, and I think he'd do an awesome job.
