  • Professors are Liberal but also Unbalanced

    This article from the New York Times discusses a theory as to why professors are liberal.  However, the question to ask about academia is why professors, regardless of their orientation on the spectrum of ideas, generally do not teach conservative ideas alongside liberal ideas. teacher For example, Amherst University has a course entitled "Taking Marx Seriously" but does not balance that with coursework in conservative ideas.  Duke University offers a certificate in Marxism and Society but does not offer certificates in free market thought.  

    Freedom of thought is very important to students, but they cannot make informed decisions about their place on the spectrum of ideas if they are never exposed to all ideas.  That is why Young America's Foundation brings big-name conservative speakers to campuses nationwide and provides resources for campus activists who share the ideas of freedom, limited government, strong national defense, and traditional values with their peers.

    • Come on Roger, you are cherry picking instead of making a good, real argument here. (But, this is the pot calling the kettle black. See: my blog.) Either way, since you’ve cherry picked, I am just going to throw something back for fun about one of your examples, Duke. Yes, Duke offers a certificate in Marxist thought, but they also offer a full degree called an MBA – plus something for undergrads too I believe – which is probably the exact opposite of a certificate in Marxism. (I know Kellogg has something for Northwestern undergrads, you should ask someone who went there maybe they know.) Either way, if you’re looking at the academic institution on the whole, I think it’s fair to say that the demand for an MBA is much greater than a certificate in Marxism, but that’s just me.

    • I'm not complaining, I'm offering a proposal that professors, regardless of their own views, offer all sides of the issues so students can decide for themselves. For example Matt, within the MBA program, professors should show different sides of the argument on business issues just as social scientists should on their subjects of interest. Can you show me which colleges offer conservative studies to balance the Marxism? MBA is different than undergraduate social science.

    • And in the same vein, who could forget Reagan's iaotrmml words in 1986 explaining why the US was bombing Libya in response to its terrorist attacks: They counted on America to be passive. They counted WRONG. I'm not sure I have ever felt so proud of a President at any moment since then. I had to physically restrain myself from jumping up and cheering because I didn't want to miss the rest of his speech.
