  • Where has all the stimulus money gone?

11/19/2009 3:43:00 PM Posted by Lauren Smith

NJC alumnus Bill McMorris has uncovered something, and something big. Big as in $787 billion big. The stimulus plan passed this year by Congress was designed to create jobs and jump start the economy. To date, the Obama Administration has reported that more than 600,000 jobs were "created or saved" as a result of the stimulus plan, but where were these jobs created?

In the 99th district of North Dakota? Nope, doesn't exist.

In Virginia's 12th district? Turns out Virginia only has 11 congressional districts.

Bill McMorris reports that nearly 30,000 jobs have been created in "phantom" districts that no longer or never existed. Originially published on the Franklin Center's Web site before many of the mainstream outlets began reporting on it, Bill's story has received  national recognition, including on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 blog. Click here to read Bill's entire story. ABC News predicts the number of jobs created in phony districts closer to 50,000, which was reported in the story they released the next day after Bill's was published.

Recovery.gov is only passing on information that is reported by the stimulus recipients, blaming "human error" for the incorrect reports. The real question is, who is fact-checking where the money was given in the first place?

Since the Associated Press has 11 spare reporters available to fact check Sarah Palin's new book, "Going Rogue," maybe they can spare a few reporters to fact check how the stimulus money is being spent and keep the government accountable!
