For Immediate Release: April 21, 2014

Washington, DC - The leadership of the George Washington University Young America's Foundation (GW YAF) calls on the University to publicly condemn the intolerant acts of vandalism that occurred against a university-approved memorial to remember the millions of lives lost to abortion. Furthermore, GW YAF encourages the GW Office of Diversity and Inclusion to call on the students responsible for the vandalism to take mandatory free speech sensitivity training as soon as they are identified. GW YAF recognizes and appreciates that the University has been supportive of our right to free speech on campus but is concerned by the school's tradition of liberal intolerance. For this reason, GW YAF believes it is time for the University to take serious steps in order to foster a safe environment for conservative students to express themselves.

On Thursday, GW YAF students placed hundreds of crosses into a grassy area on campus along with a sign that read, "In memory of the lives lost by abortion in the past year." The sign was quickly vandalized to read, "In memory of the lives saved by abortion in the past year." Before long, angry students ripped the sign off of the memorial and threw it into the trash. The students from GW YAF had secured permission from the university to display the memorial weeks in advance and are currently working on filing a police report to bring the perpetrators to justice.  Furthermore, several hateful attacks were directed at GW YAF on Twitter and on their Facebook page.

George Washington University claims to take diversity very seriously- but liberal students don't seem to have gotten the message. If the GW Office of Diversity and Inclusion believes as it says it does on its website that, "At GW, we know that studying and working on a campus that reflects and embraces a rich and broad range of human experiences and perspectives is incredibly important," it will celebrate GW YAF's mission to bring diversity of thought to campus and condemn the intolerant destruction of the group's property. GW YAF calls on the university to demonstrate that the funding that is directed towards the Office of Diversity and Inclusion supports all students and their beliefs, not a single viewpoint. Furthermore, GW YAF expects that its fellow students will be held to higher standards of tolerance so that their intellectually diverse peers may feel comfortable enough to express their beliefs on campus. In the recent past, members of GW YAF have been verbally assaulted and harassed (even being told they deserved "a special place in Hell") for bringing speakers like Phyllis Schlafly to campus and framed for hateful fliers hung by students deliberately trying to smear the organization. The vandalism of GW YAF's abortion memorial is yet another example of the continuing pattern of intolerance for conservatism at GW.

"The attacks against GW YAF and our memorial underscores the intolerant atmosphere on campus. If the university does not act, they are in fact allowing this atmosphere to fester and grow." Said President of GW YAF Emily Jashinsky. "It is sad that liberal students on campus cannot engage in a debate, and instead resort to destroying the property of those they disagree with."

    • Derdakta is wrong; it IS possible to get a more spifceic Ph.D. in a business subject matter (mine is in Marketing, not in Business with a specialization in Marketing). Rutgers (New Brunswick) offers a Ph.D. in Industrial Relations and Human Resources, which is probably your best and only option if you insist on staying within New Jersey; however, the school from which you get your Ph.D. is really critical, so I would encourage you to look a little more broadly. If you are in Northern New Jersey you could look at the schools in New York. In Southern New Jersey consider the schools in the Philadelphia area.
