  • University of Michigan RaceIt's that time of year when high school seniors across the country are considering what college to enroll in for the fall semester.  One student in weighing his options discovered that in order to graduate from the University of Michigan you must first take a course to learn how racist and intolerant the United States of America is toward minorities and different ethnicities.

Just when you thought that liberal progressivism couldn't be anymore pervasive on college campuses, something as ridiculous as a Race & Ethnicity Requirement is discovered.

The page on the website that describes the requirement states that "all courses satisfying the requirement must provide discussion concerning: the meaning of race, ethnicity, and racism; racial and ethnic intolerance and resulting inequality as it occurs in the United States or elsewhere; and comparisons of discrimination based on race, ethnicity, social class, or gender."

The fact that students need to take a course on these topics is absolutely outrageous-almost as outrageous as sensitivity training on college campuses.  What if there was a requirement to take a course on capitalism and free enterprise, I bet that would never be allowed at the University of Michigan.

The intolerance of liberals continues to permeate across the country as requirements like these are mandated on college campuses.  The Left disguises their hope to indoctrinate young impressionable minds in the form of course requirements-as if a Race & Ethnicity Requirement is subtle.  Every student has a right to free speech and to their opinions and should not be subject to taking a course on something so absurd in order to graduate.

    • This is outrageous, why are these liberal universities forcing people to face a historic reality? What's more offensive is that it's not even restricted to AMERICA. They have the audacity of proposing that "Courses that deal with these issues in other societies, or that study them comparatively, may also meet the requirement." How dare they imagine racism and inequality as something that other countries also do?

    • This was posted a while ago, but having actually attended the school, I felt I had to weigh in. So firstly, I think a lot of people are ignoring the "or elsewhere" portion of that requirement. There are a lot of courses that fulfill the R&E requirement that have nothing to do with the US whatsoever. Also not mentioned anywhere in the article or the comments, this requirement only applies to people obtaining liberal arts degrees, which have a wide range of requirements. I suppose the two years of a foreign language required is [sarcasm] stupid, because we live in America and everyone should speak English. The purpose of a liberal arts degree is to examine subjects from a wide variety of perspectives to gain insight into the world at large, and not just our own experience. Maybe you should try opening your mind a little bit as well.
