Harold SimmonsYoung America's Foundation mourns the loss of Harold Simmons, a successful businessman who dedicated his life to advancing free enterprise.  The Foundation was honored to have Mr. Simmons sponsor the Harold Simmons Free Enterprise Lecture Series.  He was a man who recognized the importance of education and providing the next generation of Americans with an understanding of our free-market system.

In addition to his entrepreneurship, Mr. Simmons is a major philanthropist.  Many of his largest contributions were to the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center and/or the Southwestern Medical Foundation.  Some of his top gifts include $17 million dollars for the Harold C. Simmons Arthritis Center and $33 million for the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center.   A portion of the funds contributed endowed five new chairs in cancer research, in honor of his four daughters and his wife Annette.

Mr. Simmons' total charitable contributions were in excess of $500 million.

Harold Simmons was a "value investor" whose style has been to acquire control of publicly-traded operating companies at attractive prices and focus on strategic and operating enhancements.  Since the 1986 acquisition of NL Industries, Mr. Simmons has primarily concentrated on investing within his existing businesses, on production efficiencies, cost controls and market position.

He had been a member of the Forbes 400 Richest People in America for more than 25 years, and he controls four publicly traded companies on the New York Stock Exchange, including NL Industries, Kronos Worldwide, Valhi, Inc., and CompX.

Mr. Simmons was raised in East Texas by school teachers and later married.  He is survived by two grown daughters, two grown step-children and five grandchildren.  He resided in Dallas, Texas and Santa Barbara, California.
