Keeping on the theme of commencement speakers, a new one from Boston College will surprise many of you.

On May 20, Irish Prime Minister Edna Kenny will address the class of 2013 at Boston College as the keynote and recipient of an honorary Doctor of Laws. The Prime Minister is currently under fire after his coalition released a pro-choice bill in the heavily Catholic dominated country. Not only did the bill start uproar amongst the Irish pro-life leaders, but also within The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts.

Per LifeSiteNews.com, The Catholic Action League called Kenny's selection "an astonishing, appalling, disgraceful and deplorable act of betrayal."

Even prominent leaders within the American Catholic Church are condemning the choice.

Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston released a statement explaining his decision to not attend the ceremony: "Since the university has not withdrawn the invitation and because the Taoiseach (prime minister) has not seen fit to decline, I shall not attend the graduation,''  reports Boston.com.

"Even for a university whose Catholic identity is as compromised as that of BC, this decision is shameful and dishonorable. Boston College has gone beyond promoting dissent against Catholic teaching to giving aid and comfort to the enemies of the Church. Every faithful Catholic in this country ought to protest against this odious perfidy," C.J. Doyle, executive director of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts, said.

The legislation recently released will allow abortions under a mental health clause for women who threaten suicide known as: "The Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill 2013." The release created uproar within the Republic and a divide within Prime Minister Kenny's party. Even Ireland's Life Institute's Niamh Uí Bhriain believes that BC should withdraw the invitation from the keynote, according to an interview with LifeSiteNews.

It doesn't seem like the school will be revoking the invitation.

Nicole is a Sarah T. Hermann Intern Scholar at Young America's Foundation and attends Mary Washington College.
