  • Conservatives Expose FemSex Workshop at Marquette

Conservative radio hosts, a professor, and a former student caused Marquette University administrators to actually stick to the university’s Catholic heritage.

The newly formed “Gender and Sexuality Resource Center” was to sponsor “FemSex: The Female Sexuality Workshop” during the spring semester. The workshop would offer three-hour sessions once a week for 12 weeks. According to the syllabus, “Themes include pleasure, health, gender, consent, boundaries, privilege, power, body image, communication, race, class, orgasms, masturbation, sex, kink, and sexual identities.” The workshop is completely student run and facilitated. The FemSex program teaches students to give into a debased and anti-Catholic view of sex and desire.

The Gender and Sexuality Resource Center held information sessions in January after posting flyers around Marquette, a historically and culturally Catholic Jesuit university.

The posters were intercepted by conservative political science Professor John McAdams and posted on his blog, Marquette Warrior, causing local Milwaukee talk radio hosts to expose Marquette’s severe lack in judgement.

As a former student at Marquette, I emailed Marquette President Father Scott Pilarz, S.J., and his staff seeking comment and a defense of the workshop.

After several days of inquiries Marquette Provost John Pauly responded in an email that, “After reviewing its content, we found that aspects of the program did not fulfill the expectations set out in the charter of the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center. Because of this, the center is no longer sponsoring the program.” He added the workshop is student run and not taught by a Marquette faculty.

Pauly noted his decision was, “on fairly specific grounds, saying that this particular workshop was not one that Marquette should be perceived as formally sponsoring through the center.” The Gender and Sexuality Resource Center is lead by Pauly’s office.

While Marquette’s leaders standing up for the principles of the school is applauded, they only did so after tough questions and pressure. FemSex should have never been considered for university sponsorship in the first place. Marquette administrators have an established pattern of retreating after public outcry. If not for watchful conservatives, FemSex might be officially sanctioned today.

In hosting FemSex, Marquette was complicit in undermining traditional Catholic values, once again caving in to the amoral push of progressive culture. Holding Marquette administrators accountable to the University's Christian Catholic traditions should never happen. Unfortunately, the left’s assault on academia is prevalent at Marquette and will continue.

    • "Ethan Hollenberger, age 22, is a conservative activist from Wisconsin. While at Marquette, he was a founding member of his campus' Young Americans for Freedom chapter." Apparently Ethan thinks freedom has limits. The freedom to express ones self in a manner that differs from "traditional catholic (the same guys that raped little boys) values" is strictly forbidden.

    • I think the Young Americans for Freedom group needs a new name. How about "Young Americans for Just Those Freedoms We Agree With." Or what about "Young Americans for the Freedom of the Patriarchy?" Maybe "Young Americans Only for Those Freedoms that Don't Challenge the Out-Dated, Oppressive, and Discriminatory Value of our Criminally Negligent Belief System." Yeah, I like that last one.

    • Ethan - Thank you for doing this. As you say, "holding Marquette administrators accountable to the University's Christian Catholic traditions should never happen." But it does have to happen and will continue to need to happen until Marquette--and so many other "Catholic" universities--decide to abide by the Magisterial teaching of the Church they claim to belong to, the Vatican cracks down on "trademark infringement" (could happen!), or they chuck the whole "Catholic" thing and admit they're like every other university so they can get in on the federal food trough.

    • Interesting that the two comments above that favor the workshop are from people who clearly hate the Catholic Church. That's terribly revealing.

    • So in the zeal to rid the University of a program of sexual scandal required to fulfill the terms of the lawsuit filed by Jodi O'Brien, brave soul Ethan is going to leave Marquette open for a larger lawsuit. Bravo, I hope it comes out of the salary of Professor McAdams. Ah well, it will only be a few million dollars. I'm sure his worth to the University is worth ten times that amount. I'm sure the program, with exciting lectures about sex and masturbation would be about as fun as listening to a lecture about Lee Harvey Oswald and JFK or dead horses being whipped for the hundredth time. Here is a better conspiracy; a few Marquette "Warriors" out on the town in expensive SUV's manage to head to a few strip clubs (think of sex and masturbation) and get arrested by the local police for underaged drinking but somehow don't get charged or get kicked off the team. Maybe all of those Evangelicals who really hate the Catholic church might want to know about that?

    • Found your blog through The Modest Mom link-up, and have been very blesesd and encouraged by it already. I have two babies (boys) that are awaiting me, and I am so glad to meet someone else who named them and is willing to acknowledge their worth and dignity as creations of the Most High God. I thank God each day for my children born to heaven and know that I will never have to worry over them or their salvation or anything, and what a blessing and a privilege to meet both my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and my two precious children at the same time! I have often found that even Christians don't like to talk about miscarriages and in my experiences very few I knew even acted as if anything had happened at all. Yet I know God valued them and He knows how I love them and long to be with them. I am currently 29 weeks pregnant expecting what will be our second son here (our oldest daughter is four) and cannot believe how gracious and loving our Father has been to us! Thank you for your wisdom and encouragement to so many of us who may not have any Titus 2 women in our local congregations for us to glean from. Love in Christ!
