About Governor Pawlenty
During his two terms as Governor of Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty used innovative and conservative leadership to balance the state’s budget, cut spending, reform health care and improve schools without raising taxes. Under his leadership, Minnesota had nation-leading health care, the highest school test scores, and a leading economy. In September 2010, the fiscally conservative Cato Institute gave Governor Pawlenty an A grade for his fiscal management.
Governor Pawlenty was elected to the local city council in 1989 and to the state House of Representatives three years later. In the state House, he quickly rose to become the Republican majority leader, and led efforts to enact the largest tax cuts in Minnesota history. After being elected governor in 2002, Governor Pawlenty kept his campaign promise and balanced every budget without raising taxes.
While keeping a lid on taxes, Governor Pawlenty championedinnovative education and health care reforms that are national models. A firmbeliever in the power of competition, his health care reforms made price andquality more transparent for patients, moving the health care system towardspaying for and achieving better health care outcomes. In order to make sureMinnesota school children were prepared for the modern economy, GovernorPawlenty’s education reforms held teachers accountable, rewarding the best withthe nation’s first statewide performance-pay program.
In 2009, Governor Pawlentycreated the Freedom First PAC which helped support candidates across thecountry. That same year, he was also elected vice chair of the RepublicanGovernors Association and played a leadership role in the victorious 2010elections. After traveling the country and seeing the challenges facingAmerican families and businesses, Governor Pawlenty formed a committee to runfor President of the United States. Young America’s Foundation isgrateful to Governor Pawlenty’s commitment to freedom and improving ourcountry. He recognizes, as Ronald Reagan did, the importance of teachingyoung people about freedom’s virtues. Over the years, he has spent histime addressing Young America’s Foundation audiences, including our West CoastLeadership Conference, Midwest Student Conference, Rawhide Circle, and fourCPAC conferences in Washington, D.C.
