About Conor Burns:
Conor Burns was born in Belfast in 1972 and his family moved to Hertfordshire in 1980. He joined the Conservative Party at the earliest age possible and became involved at school. At University Conor Chaired the Southampton University Conservative Association. He served as a Member of Southampton City Council for several years and contested a Parliamentary seat in the 2001 and 2005 General Elections before being elected to serve as Member of Parliament for Bournemouth West in 2010. Conor was the first of the new intake of MPs to be promoted to Government serving as a Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Northern Ireland Office 2010-12 before resigning to vote against the Government on a point of principle.
He met Lady Thatcher first in 1992 and got to know her well after 1997. Lady Thatcher carried out of last constituency speaking event for him in 2002 - after having retired from public speaking. In her last years Conor visited Lady Thatcher at her home every Sunday evening for drinks where they developed a close bond. In his tribute to her in the House of Commons Conor described her as "a mentor, a protectress, [and] friend.” Conor is coordinating plans to build the Margaret Thatcher Centre in London, a facility modeled on Young America’s Foundation’s Reagan Ranch Center, to honor the life, legacy and achievements of Lady Thatcher, and which Lady Thatcher herself endorsed prior to her death.
