  • Conservatives on the Rise: Barendse Joins YAF Team

5/31/2013 3:04:16 PM Posted by Adam Tragone

BarendeseLana Barendse is one of the newest interns at the Reagan Ranch Center. As a high school student, Lana was first introduced to Young America's Foundation through the conservative club on her campus. Lana attended various conferences at the Reagan Ranch Center and was inspired by the speakers and like-minded student activists to find her place in the Conservative Movement. Motivated by the ideas and resources suggested at the conferences, she brought an enthusiasm back to her high school campus and implemented projects such as the 9/11: Never Forget Project to honor the fallen heroes of the terrorist attacks, as well as Freedom Week activities to celebrate the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. As the president of her high school's conservative club, she and her club members exposed the unfairness of socialism by using the example of grade point average redistribution in their government and economics classes.

Lana is studying public relations and advertising as well as political science at Chapman University. This past school year, she has made strides to restart the campus conservative club, which has been dormant for more than four years. The club hosted a debate series between the campus conservatives and liberals on issues leading up to the 2012 election and hosted viewing events of the presidential debates. The club looks forward to hosting roundtable events with conservative professors and volunteering in efforts to support the military in the coming year. Lana also plans to implement more of Young America's Foundation's conservative activism ideas and bring a conservative speaker to Chapman's campus.

Lana is interning at the Reagan Ranch Center for the summer and is honored to be surrounded by a staff of such dedicated members of the Conservative Movement. She hopes to use her internship as an opportunity to grow as a conservative and better share the principles of her role model, Ronald Reagan.
