UNC123Chapel Hill, NC- With one hour left of Young America's Foundation’s 9/11: Never Forget Project, directly in front of 3,000 American flags representing the victim of the 9/11 terrorist attack, a member of UNC faculty insulted the memory and legacy of the innocent Americans murdered that day.

For the last several years, the UNC conservative club has set up the 9/11: Never Forget Project in front of Wilson Library in Polk Place, a large quad, in which many of the classrooms and offices for professors are located. I have had the honor of being the coordinator for the past two years. As news spread of the destruction of the 9/11 display in Middlesbury, I became concerned for the safety of our flags and returned to stand watch on a wall next to the memorial.

An individual began to confront me about the memorial. Having been on campus for several years, I am used to being confronted about my activities, but not this way. A woman identified herself as a “member of faculty” and that she was “concerned by the message that my club was trying to project.”

In a condescending demeanor, this faculty member claimed that, through her knowledge of media and mass communication, the sign for the event, which takes the shape of the pentagon, plane, and twin towers, was commercializing and fetishizing the attacks. She went on to lamenting the attacks, claiming, “Each god-d-mn year students come into my class talking about it. It is just a huge f—king distraction.”

After reminding her of the historic impact that the events had had on American foreign policy and how is has shaped the world we live in today, she said the sign was her main issue. I then gently reminded her that many causes, including the AIDS campaign along with the cancer research foundations had started the same way. Now ribbons and bumper magnets represent them. After all this, she confessed that she had friends that lost their lives in 9/11 and claimed that they would agree with her.

Even after being personally insulted, I tried to diffuse the situation; I calmly told her that we would have to agree to disagree. Not being satisfied with simply walking away from a simple disagreement, the “faculty” member proceeded to walk away, turned around and said, “Well at least your freedom of speech isn’t being squashed.”

She refused give me her name, but demanded mine. It is sad to see a faculty member, an individual who would have no problem articulating her opinion, refuse to tell her name but hide behind those three letters: PhD.

    • The Faculty at our public universities is much farther removed from the principles of our American Heritage than I ever imagined. Well written. Great work Ben.

    • Not just a movement away from principles, but a movement away from class (as in no class or low class). yes. We have free speech. But the spaces representing "bleeps" sure tell a tale.
