TCU YAF Debt 1As the semester finished up, the Texas Christian University YAF chapter raised awareness of the nation’s economic troubles through a National Debt Project.

The project consisted of posting the balooning national debt number on a banner above the university common area where all students and faculty could see. After a week of showing the national debt number to TCU’s campus, the chapter hung a second banner that increases awareness of President Obama’s budget proposal--a plan that is far more shocking than our rapidly rising debt. Posted directly next to the current national debt number, the second banner reads the fact that “Obama’s budget proposal would increase the national debt to $25.4 trillion over the next decade.”

In addition to raising the national debt to an astonishing and unsustainable level, the most recent nonpartisan analysis of Obama’s budget found that not only would taxes rise for those earning more than $200,000, but also that earners in nearly every income bracket would face a greater tax burden--despite the President’s promise to not raise taxes on those making less than $200,000. All in all, Obama’s budget would lead to the highest federal tax rate in 4 decades.

Raising awareness about Obama’s detrimental budget proposal and national debt on university campuses is extremely important in not only furthering the Conservative Movement, but also in preparing students for what they will face after graduation. The largest national debt growth under any other president in history, increasing tax hikes on the middle class, and overall recognition of economic policy effects may be important for our parents to know, but is even more vital for the future of those who are currently students.

As articulated by Ronald Reagan, “Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction.”
