  • Cain, Stossel, Forbes reach Thousands On Campuses

Herman Cain at ColumbiaBy Patrick Coyle, Young America's Foundation

April is typically a busy month for Young America's Foundation's campus lecture program and this year is no exception.

Thanks in part to the Wendy P. McCaw Lecture Series, some of the Conservative Movement's biggest names visited campuses across the country addressing thousands of students and community members. Rudy Giuliani spoke to a crowd of 2,000 at the University of the Cumberlands as part of their Center for Excellence in Leadership. Columbia University YAF hosted Herman Cain to a crowd of more than 250 where he discussed tax policy and other challenges facing students. As reported by the Columbia Spectator , "Cain spent much of his speech arguing that decades of excessive regulation, taxation, and legislation—which he referred to collectively as “the ‘ations’”—are killing the American economy. 'How did we get into this mess?' he asked. 'If you don’t believe we are in a mess, you’ve been living under a rock somewhere. You’re not paying attention.'”

John Stossel with Marquette YAFMr. Cain also made a visited with members of Marquette University YAF following his speech at the Foundation's Freedom Conference. YAF chapter chair, Craig Maechtle wrote that, "Being able to meet Herman Cain in such a small setting was truly remarkable. He is a very kind man and everything he said was down to earth and related to the ideas and issues that students are concerned with. His story about his father's quest for the American Dream was touching, and truly demonstrates the best of our country. Mr. Cain's visit was a great experience for many of our newer members who have been inspired to take on larger roles within our group."

Indeed, Marquette YAF has been busy the last few weeks as they also just recently hosted John Stossel as part of his book tour for his new book, No They Can't: Why Government Fails, but Individuals Succeed. A packed house greeted Stossel and throughout the speech Stossel stressed the importance of individual freedom and free markets over more government control. "Hosting John Stossel is one of the top moments of my time at Marquette University," writes Craig.  "Our YAF chapter spent many hours working on the event, and their dedication helped to make it our most successful event of the year. We were able to draw in a large amount of students who all came away from Mr. Stossel's speech having heard a new perspective, one which they almost certainly had never heard before. Mr. Stossel challenged the audience to think beyond turning to government to solve problems and spoke to the power of the individual."

Finally, Steve Forbes addressed students at UMASS-Amherst on a speech based on his book, "How Capitalism Will Save Us."According to the MassLive.com , Forbes criticized the Buffett Rule saying, “In effect it raises the capital gains tax to rates we haven’t seen since the '70s, which means two things, you destroy capital, and you get less revenue and less capital creation. We’ve seen this movie before.”

    He also criticized ObamaCare stating:

Ask yourselves, ‘Why is there a health care crisis?’ People will say, ‘Well, we want more health care, people like me are getting older and consuming more health care and it becomes more expensive.’ But ask yourself, why is the demand for health care considered a crisis, and not an opportunity? In every other part of our lives, if we want more of something, it seems a great opportunity for our entrepreneurs. So what’s with health care? Why is this seen as a disaster and not a real opportunity?” said Forbes. “The answer is we don’t have real free markets in health care.” Forbes argued that in areas where free markets have permeated the health care industry, technological innovations have flourished while the cost to consumers has stayed relatively the same. More speakers are still traveling the county on behalf of the Foundation speaking on college campuses including Karl Rove, S.E. Cupp, John Stossel, and others. If you would like to host a prominent conservative on your campus, please contact us

    • yes the main problem with the self help inutrdsy is not the beliefs, it's allowing anyone else to tell you there was something wrong in the first place. The entire inutrdsy is based on a lie that keeps getting perpetuated by many going in the wrong direction.
