  • Racial Preferences: Fair or Unfair?

3/13/2014 2:13:33 PM Posted by Ashley Pratte

CalStateCurrently, in California there is a proposal to reinstate racial preferences (promoted as affirmative action by the Left) at California's public universities which is stirring a lot of debate from some Asian-American groups who disagree with the proposal.

Many Asian-Americans believe that reinstating racial preferences would make it tougher for future generations because the universities would be filling "race-quotas" rather than admitting based on achievement and fairness.  Since race-quotas were done away with in 1996 there has been a three percent increase in enrollment among Asian-Americans at California public universities.

As a result of the widespread debate, protests, and petitioning by the Asian-American population, a couple of liberal Senators who were once in favor of the measure are now drawing back their support.

These demonstrations and uprising against racial preferences show just how unfair people-especially minority populations-believe affirmative action to be.  The efforts led by Asian-American groups should be applauded because they recognize that filling quotas rather than admitting by merit is reprehensible.

    • This raises some interesting questions... in some of the UC schools, Asians make up 46% of admitted freshmen, and whites are reduced to 29%. At some point, certain "minorities" can be so successful that affirmative action becomes directed against them.
