  • Marietta College Resists 9/11: Never Forget Project

9/2/2011 2:53:24 PM Posted by Ron Meyer

By Sarah Snow – Marietta College

Fighting the “good fight” on college campuses is tough, but someone’s got to do it. At my school, this usually consists of a small group of my peers speaking our beliefs, and being called “crazy conservatives.”

If we do events on our own, we’re scorned for not uniting with the liberals. If we try to voice our opinion through posters, they get ripped down. Finding an advisor is hard work, but finding members who want to be affiliated with us is even harder. Students want to get good grades and be liked by teachers, and it’s harder to do these with a liberal faculty, so they stay “closet conservatives.”

In the past these have been minor setbacks, and then we moved on. However, this year, when the setback came two days into the semester, I’d had enough.

Fighting for the 9/11: Never Forget Project

All summer my student group has been planning our 9/11: Never Forget Project and it had been approved since June. On the first day back, I stopped by the Student Life office to confirm all plans were still a go for our American flag memorial and candlelight vigil. They confirmed, and I was surprised at how smoothly it all played out.

I was right to be surprised.

The next day, I received an email stating that the vigil was no longer allowed, and the American Flag Garden could only be displayed if we also presented the flags of every other country that also experienced a loss on 9/11 (Over 90 countries).

Was 9/11 an attack on diversity?

My jaw dropped as I read the email. How could they expect our club to pay for other flags? First of all, we had not budgeted for it. Second, why was it just now being sprung onto me when they’ve known for months?

Finally, why should we place the extra flags anyways? It was an attack on AMERICANS, AMERICAN ideals, AMERICAN capitalism, defense, and freedom. The World Trade Center wasn’t hit because a Chinese accountant was working that morning; it was hit because American capitalists were there.  As for the vigil, I was even more baffled. There was literally no reason noted in the email that warranted the cancellation of the event.

I immediately walked into the Student Life office and began making my case. They began throwing out the typical “P.C.” nonsense that I expected. “We have a global outlook at this school and we cannot ignore the Chinese and Muslim students who also suffered losses.” “We need to look at all aspects of the event so there isn’t a negative reaction from the International Students.”

They threw out their reasoning for the flags and yet no good reason for the vigil cancellation had appeared. They sent me out of the office with no sufficient answers and told me to email the faculty member who had made the decision.

    How to win the battle

At this point I felt powerless and inferior. I took a moment to collect myself and then rallied the troops. The next 24 hours were very important. I emailed my advisor and he emailed the President of the College. I also contacted 9/12 groups and Young America's Foundation who both presented me with advice and leverage.  Then I waited for a response from the administration.

By the next day, I had received an email inviting me to a meeting to discuss the decision. I prepared my logic and facts all day, and showed up with my Treasurer to defend the 9/11: Never Forget Project. The meeting went by quickly with a few raised voices and conflicting ideas, but in the end, we agreed on the initial plan for the event with the small caveat that the other flags would have to be added at the expense of the school.

It is obvious that the board’s assumptions and skewed facts paired with bad communication caused for this whole situation to be blown out of proportion. I’m appreciative that the decision was overturned, and we now get to host this event. But, it should have never been an issue to begin with.

If this happens at your school, I urge you to fight. I encourage you to find community allies or call YAF to get your point made. Like I said before, it’s a tough job—but someone’s got to do it and it might as well start with you.

    • So I guess now on July 4th we will have to raise the British Union Jack flag as well as the U.S. Flag so as not to offend anyone. Oh my, it appears that the voice of truth is being silenced through the daily dose of the liberal media.

    • Hello Sarah, As a legal immigrant ( 1982 ) and now US Citizen and US Army Veteran Gulf War 1 ( 1983-1992), I urge you to stand for what your heart dictates the truth. Never waver to political correctness! Political correctness is another word for LIE and is what most left wing liberals harbours in life. Most people can't handle the truth ( especially liberals ) and will debunk the truth by all means. I have debated far left loons many time ( including those with MASTERS Degrees ) and they have left the debate with a heavy / sore heart because I pin the truth at them. As what the biblical saying goes: " The truth shall set you free!" Abide by this maxim and your heart will be at peace at all times!! All the best to you.

The free market system is the only ecomonic system that will tend to gradually open up the channels for political freedom in years to come.

    • It's truly sad how academia has been hijacked by ultra liberals and anti-americanism. Their PC of presenting flags for those lost were insulting because they were Americans regardless of their background. I live in New York and most people who came here went through a lot to be here and are more proud of their American status then the liberals who bash America. I congratulate you on your fight and winning! Keep up the good work!

    • This is why we need to get back to the basics. God, country and freedom. This PC has gone way too far to where the conservatives who love God and their country do not have rights anymore. We need this Administration to be a one term. We need to change the direction of this country before we are unable to. When a group of students at any college can not have a vigil of a terror attack on this country and changed it forever. Some thing is really wrong and we have to change it. 2012 can't come quick enough.

It is such a ridiculous stretch to think that anyone would be 'offended' by your memorial service, and the reality that anyone FROM another country would be living and working in America, if they felt they were not part of it - inclusive in your services for 9-11. Bah! Thanks for your courage and determination, and thanks for keeping your 'eye on the ball'. 'Tough time to be a student, but you have a whole lot of support "off-campus", and maybe you'll shame those 'in-the-closet' students to grow a backbone.

    • This is just a small part of the PC problem. PC ties our hands from ever being able to voice an opinion or to be free to express ourselves publicly. Instead of allowing us to do these things and respect our beliefs we are censored because someone may object. So, I object... I object to PC censoring. Someone, somewhere, or some group etc. will be insulted no matter what the issue is...this just stops progress, social freedoms, and opinions....something our country has been built on and valued over the course of our history.

    • Having a neice living in Marietta, I am sending this ridiculous biased college announcement that clearly punishes conservative "views" and I would have thought a 9/11 event or an AMerican flag would be non-biased by any "American" living in this country. Obviously my past views of this college have changed. I doubt my neice will have the same feelings about this choice for a college degree also. Keep it up and a lot of relatives shall not be frequenting the steps of such a biased and outright blatant disrespect of individual views and of our American flag and what it stands for. In case this college has forgotten, it stands for "freedom" for "ALL" not only whom they choose to 'allow' those freedoms to on their campus. Dispicable and disrespect is NOT what we want for our children or relatives. We'll seek another more respectful college.

At that time, I wasn't completely sure of my own discontent, but today I am seeing what caused my discontent, my questioning. ALL, ALL realms of education have been used for almost 100 years to pander the "progressive thinking". Since we now have generations who have been taught to accept this thinking, therefore becoming complacent followers, the "Progressive movement" is pressing hard to take over our country. They said in the late 1920's they would do just that; never fire a shot. KUDOS to Miss Snow and her group. I do hope the Marietta and College residents understand their position in history and come back to the foundation that was layed there.

When students across the country went on strike after the Kent State riot, one of my professors declared everyone who went on strike would ace the class (Modern Poetry). I informed him I would not be in class or on strike but expected an "A" anyway. Guess what, I got it and did waste the rest of the semester listening to his drivel.

It is accurate to say that the neo-marxism that has run so rampant in our MSM and the DNC is a MENTAL DISORDER. It has to be - they believe in things that dont work; that history proves dont work; and which also prove that "living life as they wish it to be, rather living life as it is" is their chief goal in life. There is no other way to say it - they are morons.

First off, I agree, this was not an attack because people from other countries were working in the Twin Towers, it was because they were on AMERICAN SOIL! That is why the American flag should be the only one present. If people from other countries want their flag to be present, then they should bring their own flag! That sounds like a logical solution to me.

Now we're supposed to feel obligated to fly other flags while we're mourning the loss of those who we murdered that day in AMERICA?! The attacks did happen here. What's next? Are the P.C. folks going to ask that we not specify where the attacks happened, or that they even happened at all? Should we demand that when immigrants fly the flags of their country of origin that they also fly an American flag? We, as Americans who appreciate the priviledge of living in this great nation should be sickened by the behavior of these folks who have obviously lost touch with reality. Who are you to say that American lives are more valuable then those from other countries? Do you honestly think that God values American more? What is the argument against placing flags of people from other countries who lost their lives that day? That they were unamerican? That they aren't as "good" as us? They were attacked in the same way and same manner as the Americans that day. They lost their lives in the same way. They had families, children, and friends. Why must we treat them any differently?

Every life lost on 911 was a waste and each person should be remembered by their families and friends. By your placing the AMERICAN FLAG you are showing that this was indeed an attack on our country and our citizens. Thank you again and keep your integrity!

    • Congratulations on your thoughtful response to this ridiculous situation. But, you lost. There are going to be foreign flags mixed in with the American flags -- and yet this was an attack on America on American soil. I am unclear if these "muslim students" are foreign nationals or if they are Americans. If the latter, why would they be offended at seeing the flag of their nation -- is a muslim always American second? If they are foreign students, why would they be offended unless they think the attack was a good thing? As for the Chinese students - I don't think they have a dog in the fight. What objection could they possibly have to a display of American flags -- they chose to come here for education, not to promote their system of government. We are not China's enemy. Why would a college hold that loyalty to country is backwards? They want to be a pristine plot of ground with no associations to country -- even as they benefit from the civilization that surrounds them on every side. I think many "progressives" have this attitude -- that patriotism is old hat and they are the future -- a future defined as themselves alone. Sorry, but you were thoroughly beaten. The foreign flags that have no reason to be displayed will be mingled among the Stars and Stripes. Who cares if you aren't paying for them? The politically correct at your college diluted your message and promoted theirs. And your group did all the work to set up the situation. You lost. Be bitter, fight harder. You now have something else to never forget.

    • A couple points that I feel deserve reminding : -Marietta College is a private school, and as such is solely in control of its mission, reputation, curriculum, etc. Whatever core values it uses to make its decisions do not have to align with the students', the city's, the state's, or the nation's. Free speech and all that. - Of course you'll say, "what about Miss Snow's right to free speech?" Well, she is welcome to it at home or in a public forum. The college owns the property the event would have taken place on, and would be de factor endorsing the event and would therefore have to align with its core values, like the value of globalization. Since they felt the event did not meet this qualification, Snow's free speech is trumped by the college. -Finally, organizations at Marietta, like the College Republicans, receive funding for events like this from the Student Activities Fund administered by students through the Student Senate. Applications for funding must list the specific purpose of the event and argue how the event would be for the entire campus community. If this event was funded in this way, Miss Snow's group would have pledged that it would be for the entire campus community---including a substantial number of international students who may have been directly effected by 9/11. The college's request that Snow honor this pledge by which the college's inclusivity policy is based, is more than reasonable.

    • As a Marietta College Alumnus I congratulate you Sara! Keep up the good fight and never forget the attack on America. The other students who are not behind the vigil, or from different countries do not have to attend the event. If these students from other countries do not like it, they can go back to their home country receive their education

    • I am so surprised. The last comment by George makes me wonder. Marietta was my home for 20 years. I went to Marietta College for several classes. Dissappointment in their response to Sarah's request doesn't seem descriptive enough. There should be room on Marietta's Campus for this remembrance more so than any other campus. Marietta was founded based on liberty and freedom through the writings of the Northwest Ordinance. Have the Marietta College Administrators and staff forgotten their Founders principles?
