Young America's Foundation would like to congratulate Jared
Marcum for "sticking to his guns" and standing up for his
Seventy days later, the charges against 14-year-old Jared Marcum
have been dropped.
Logan Middle School band teacher, David Burroway, commanded
Jared to turn his NRA t-shirt inside out because he believe the
hunting rifle was offensive to the other students. Jared refused
the teacher's outrageous demand, and ended up in the principal's
His t-shirt did not violate the school policy. Mr. Burroway was
in clear violation of Jared's First Amendment rights. All Jared
wanted was a chance to tell his side of the story, but he was
silenced by threats of a terrorism charge. Three police officers
fled to the scene and Jared was handcuffed for "obstructing an
Jared was facing up to a $500 fine or a year in juvenile
detention. Thankfully, all charges were dropped. Jared's attorney,
Ben White, plans to move forward with a civil suit against the
Logan County School District.
Although the dismissal should have come sooner, we can only hope
that this will be a lesson to school districts everywhere.
