In the summer of 1776, the Continental Congress declared the colonies “are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states.” That line was said in one final push to convince former loyal British subjects to declare independence, which they did two days later. (The line even made it into the Declaration.)
Let that sink in for a moment. Because of the bravery of a handful of men, we enjoy so many freedoms today.
While the Fourth of July is fun – we enjoy barbeques, fireworks, et cetera – it should also be treated as a day to give thanks for our freedoms. So before you chow down on your hot dog, give a shout out to the Founding Fathers. They are the men who gave us our freedoms.
