During commencement ceremonies at Utah State University on Saturday, actor Danny Glover did not put his hand over his heart as a color guard brought the American flag into the ceremony. Glover is a friend of socialist, anti-American Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, along with other prominent leftists, including Cornel West and Harry Belafonte. Chavez's government is even giving $18-20 million to Glover to finance some of his films.
Students booed at Glover and one even shouted: "Put your hand over your heart, Glover." This episode is common among commencement ceremonies at the nation's colleges and universities. Speakers with views that align with the majority of the faculty are often invited to speak to give students one last call to action for liberal policies. In 2004, the president of George Washington University, Stephen Trachtenberg, told students, "If anybody has a mortarboard, you can move your tassels from right to
left, right to left, which is what I hope happened to your [views] in
the last four years."
