2013: YAF’S TOP TEN POLITICALLY CORRECT OFFENSES ON CAMPUS

2013 was a year for many offenses against the beloved American traditions of truth, free enterprise, and freedom. Some of the worst offenses are found on school campuses. To close-out the year, we at Young America’s Foundation (YAF) present the Top Ten Politically Correct Offenses on campus:posted on

2,977 American Flags Ripped Out of the Ground at Middlebury College

Each year, more than 200 schools participate in YAF’s 9/11: Never Forget project. Unfortunately, at Middlebury College in Vermont, five student protestors ripped from the ground all 2,997 flags commemorating each of the lives lost on 9/11.

    2. Vandals Destroy Pro-Life Display at DePaul University

Vandals Destroy Pro-Life Display at DePaul University

On the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, 13 students at DePaul University destroyed a pro-life display created by DePaul’s Young Americans for Freedom Chapter. All 500 pink and blue flags meant to symbolize some of the lives lost due to abortion, were thrown into various campus garbage cans.

    3. School Bans Prayer at Graduation Ceremonies—Valedictorian Recites the Lord’s Prayer Anyway

School Bans Prayer at Graduation Ceremonies--Valedictorian Recites the Lord's Prayer Anyway

In June, graduating high school senior, Roy Costner IV decided to ditch his graduation speech and instead recite the Lord’s Prayer. He did this to take a stand against his school district’s decision to ban prayer at graduation ceremonies.

    4. Clemson YAF Chapter Condemned for Supporting Second Amendment Rights

Clemson YAF Chapter Condemned for Supporting Second Amendment Rights

Clemson’s Young Americans For Freedom Chapter decided to host a Second Amendment Banquet where they gave away a Mossberg 715T semiautomatic rifle. The group followed state laws and even required a background check of the winner before the gun could be handed over. A select minority of people on campus and in the local community condemned the group.

    5. High School Administrators Disagree with Santorum’s Views, Cancel Speech

High School Administrators Disagree with Santorum's Views, Cancel Speech

Back in April, a speech by former Presidential candidate Rick Santorum was cancelled by a school district in Michigan citing the Senator’s “divisive” stances on traditional marriage. Even though the topic of the Senator’s discussion would be on leadership, the event at Grosse Point High School was still canceled. Due to pressure from YAF and national media, the school district changed their mind and allowed the event to proceed as planned, but demanded that students get parental permission in order to attend the speech.

    6. Ball State Student Waterboarded to Show Support for Guantanamo Bay Closure

Ball State Student Waterboarded to Show Support for Guantanamo Bay Closure

Students at Ball State University staged a demonstration voicing their support for the detention center’s closing. Their demonstration went so far as to actually waterboard a student.

    7. Unisex Bathrooms Celebrated on New Jersey Campus

The public, taxpayer-funded College of New Jersey (TCNJ) dedicated an entire week on campus to gender-neutral bathrooms. This campaign was meant to bring awareness to the lack of “equality” on campus, so the obvious thing to do was to make the most trafficked bathrooms on campus gender-neutral.

    8. Virginia Tech Professor Doesn’t Want to Support Our Troops

Virginia Tech Professor Doesn’t Want to Support Our Troops

Steven Salaita, an associate professor at Virginia Tech published a column on Salon.com titled “No, thanks: Stop Saying Support The Troops”. He went as far as to say that “troop worship is trite and tiresome”.

    9. Duquesne University Official Removes Posters Featuring “Off Putting” Facts About Communism

During YAF’s Freedom Week, the conservative club at Duquesne University distributed and hung posters around campus that educated students about how communist regimes have oppressed and murdered more than 100 million people. The images were deemed “off-putting” by a school administrator and were subsequently torn down from the residence halls on campus.

    10. Liberal State Legislator Claims that Whistles and Safe Zones are Enough to Stop Campus Rapes

Liberal State Legislator Claims that Whistles and Safe Zones are Enough to Stop Campus Rapes

Liberal Colorado State Rep. Joe Salazar attacked the notion that carrying guns might make young women in college safer. Rep. Salazar adamantly believes that phones, whistles, and safe zones provide all the protection they need.

    • Whoah whoah whoah. Let's talk about Steven Salaita. Did you even read his article? First of all, it's Professor Salaita's RIGHT to express his opinion. Second, he's not saying "screw the troops!" If you'd bother to read. He's saying this passive, unthinking, and empty "support" is a detriment to our troops.... Here's a tidbit.... "Such troop worship is trite and tiresome, but that’s not its primary danger. A nation that continuously publicizes appeals to “support our troops” is explicitly asking its citizens not to think. It is the ideal slogan for suppressing the practice of democracy, presented to us in the guise of democratic preservation." or maybe this one.,... "Those who know me might be surprised by my position, but it arises from a belief consistent with my political outlook, that the power of institutions can never overwhelm the simple act of thinking. In other words, even if the military as an institution often does bad things, the individuals that comprise the military do not have to become bad people. Soldiers can certainly be awful human beings, but so can professors, clerks, musicians, executives, landscapers and athletes." and finally, the idea that we're creating an ideal that our troops simply can't live up to... "This way of thinking also inversely demystifies the troops, who are burdened with untenable narratives of heroism the vast majority (like those in all professions) do not deserve. I am neither smart nor foolish enough to define “heroism,” but I am comfortable saying the mere fact of being a soldier doesn’t automatically make one a hero, just as the mere fact of being in prison doesn’t necessarily make one evil." You see, the professor isn't bashing the troops. (I'll ask again, did you even read the article?) He's calling attention to the fact that our country is compelling its people to deify soldiers, to make their mission unquestionably good. When in reality, we all know that -- most of the time -- our military isn't protecting our freedoms. I'm a vet. I know! Ask any group of soldiers, chances are a fair amount that retain their ability to THINK are simply smart guys and gals who took an opportunity that could pay off for them. They hold no illusions about what their role is. It's to carry out orders and not ask questions. We are not all heroes. Hell, most of us are just normal guys doing a job. Besides....the author of this post is probably a nice young, conservative lady that went to catholic school. So she's probably taken an ethics course. So I ask, Who makes the ethical decisions to carry out orders? and who is trained to not ask questions? The troops. Who makes war possible? The troops. This isn't world war 2. There's no noble cause. I don't support the troops, I wish them a safe return. The professor is a GOOD american who asks questions. By imploring us to stop supporting our troops with this empty yellow ribbon bullshit, we're doing them a favor. Because the financial interests that control them sure as hell are not.

    • Is not communicating we "Support our Troops" another way we support our form of government? Is it not the office of the president that committed them to battle in the first place. If you support our troops were ever and whenever they are called to do battle, we have the right as citizens of this great country to change our leadership every four years!

    • So if "support our troops" is "trite and tiresome", what is "support gay rights" or "yes, we can"? Our troops are the only reason that leftists are allowed to spew their hate.

    • Heard about this extremist trash on the radio yesterday, and the host and callers fell into crybaby mode about "oppression." The the WORST thing that happened was flags being thrown away, this is absolutely pathetic. In NONE of these cases was a single soul harmed in the slightest, and most of these have insanely misleading headlines. To GIVE AWAY A WEAPON OF DEATH is not "supporting the 2nd amendment." Vile McCarthyite lies (Communism never killed ANYBODY, fascism which is NOT socialism killed them, and this ignores the many millions capitalism legitimate HAS murdered, including hundreds of thousands every year in the US) Keeping students safe on campus is perverted into "these are the only ways to prevent rape," an absolutely despicable lie that is not even vaguely CLOSE to what the person involved said. You think a professor EXPRESSING HIS OPINION about our deification of soldiers and our empire-building military is "oppression"? Pass the crying towel. And how, exactly, were you extremist nutballs "oppressed" by a student being asked to FOLLOW THE CONSTITUTION YOU HYPOCRITES CLAIM TO BACK by not using public resources to promote religion, then turning around and doing so anyway. The REAL oppression is of those who follow minority religions, or none whatsoever. But the crybaby act of the year goes to the hysterical nonsense from the YAF chapter at DePaul, which called removing flags "a hate crime." This is not only a lie, it's a TRULY hateful slur against victims of REAL hate crime. You people are a disgrace to freedom and justice, and really really whiny to book. Get a grip. You are NOT oppressed.

    • Seriously Don? You actually believe our troops are the ones responsible for the professors ability to "spew his hate"? Go ahead and keep the wool over your eyes. Our freedom of speech is just fine, and the families in American occupied countries like Afghanistan don't threaten our rights one bit. Its all about the $$$$
