Hadford1If someone told me last January that in the next eight months I would start a new club at school, visit the Reagan Ranch, intern with Young America's Foundation, and attend the National Conservative Student Conference, I would have looked at them like they are nuts.

Visiting Reagan's Ranch in May was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I'll never forget the thundering mountains hovering the valley, the crisp clean air, and the feeling that you will meet President Reagan himself working on the fences or riding down the trails. The humble, yet beautiful home, that Reagan made for himself says more about the man than any speech he gave or policy he ever made.

A few weeks later, I began my internship at Young America's Foundation's headquarters in Herndon, Virginia. Daily tasks included researching the history of the Foundation, writing articles for The New Guard, recruiting young people for the summer conferences, helping support Young Americans for Freedom chapters, brainstorming ideas for reaching out to more students, but most importantly, learning the lasting accomplishments and values of the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan.

Hadford2I would like to thank several people in the office who tirelessly work to keep the Foundation operating. I want to thank Dede, for teaching me how to use all the office tools and never once hesitating to answer my hundreds of questions. Thank you Cheri, for helping me with my computer disabilities. And Kate, for being my first contact at the Foundation and getting me excited and more interested in the YAF mission. I want to thank Hillary, for editing my articles and helping me to publish one in national news. Thank you Katie, for all of your impeccable work to plan and run the greatest conservative conferences in the country. Nikki, Rich and Tamara, thank you for your work in the financial department and guiding me on my finances for my YAF chapter. Kimberly, Nicole, Jess, Richard, Josh, Ingrid, Darla, and Amy, thank you all for always being friendly and making me feel at home in the office. A special thank you to Pat, for mentoring me on my own Young Americans for Freedom chapter at UVA and teaching me more about conservative activism. Lastly, thank you Ron, for your continued efforts to inspire and encourage young people to fight for what they believe in.

At the 35th National Conservative Student Conference, Senator Rick Santorum told college students from around the country, "Young America's Foundation is one of the few organizations that really goes out and focuses resources on you in your battles on those campuses. And I'm thankful for them."

Hadford3I strongly believe that Young America's Foundation is the heart of the Conservative Movement. Just as the heart pumps blood through vessels to circulate blood throughout the body, Young America's Foundation circulates students through conferences, seminars, YAF chapters and other programs to spread conservative principles to students around the whole country. The Conservative Movement starts here, and I am thankful that I had the opportunity to begin my activism with the greatest youth conservative organization in the world.
