Ann Coulter will be speaking Thursday at Georgetown University, and predictably, Leftists on campus are up in arms.
Over 150 people have joined a Facebook event group: “Hate Has No Place Here: Oppose Ann Coulter’s Visit to Campus.” Kind of an ironic title, don’t you think? Isn’t it more than just a little hateful and intolerant to oppose someone’s free speech on campus?
This Facebook group accuses Coulter of having “hatred towards minority groups” without listing one example. Not only are these attacks intellectually dishonest and wrong, they’re also wildly hypocritical.
Georgetown’s Lecture Fund gave 9/11 conspiracy theorist Michael Moore $10,000 for his speech just a few weeks ago. If this group wants to use ad hominem attacks to call Coulter hateful, how do they explain the following comments by Michael Moore?
"I would like to apologize for referring to George W. Bush as a 'deserter.' What I meant to say is that George W. Bush is a deserter, an election thief, a drunk driver, a WMD liar, and a functional illiterate. And he poops his pants." – Letter for Moore to supporters, Tuesday, January 27th, 2004
"White people scare the crap out of me. … I have never been attacked by a black person, never been evicted by a black person, never had my security deposit ripped off by a black landlord, never had a black landlord … never been pulled over by a black cop, never been sold a lemon by a black car salesman, never seen a black car salesman, never had a black person deny me a bank loan, never had a black person bury my movie, and I've never heard a black person say, 'We're going to eliminate ten thousand jobs here - have a nice day!'" – From Moore’s book, Stupid White Men
Did these campus leftists protest Moore's speech? No. Did they call for the Lecture Fund to remove their support for Moore? No. Will they apologize to Ann Coulter for insulting her character? Probably not.
The same leftists in academia who supposedly support tolerance only tolerate their own radical views. When conservatives want to share ideas on campus, these leftists use personal, fallacious attacks in their attempts to deny free speech.
