  • Free Speech Under Attack Across the Country

12/20/2013 10:34:27 AM Posted by Ashley Pratte

PhilNow more than ever it is time for us to wake up as a nation.  Our constitutional right to free speech and freedom of expression are at risk.  It took a celebrity like Phil Robertson from the hit Duck Dynasty to stir up a national conversation about God-given rights and free speech.

Each individual whether student, celebrity, parent, or grandparent is entitled to their right to free speech.  We see more and more instances of our constitutional right being infringed upon on school campuses, public arenas, and the workplace.

It is time for us to stand up and make our voices heard.  Our liberties are what make America special.  Our Founding Fathers fought to protect our rights, not to have them restricted and trampled upon.  As our culture becomes more "politically correct" we have seen an overwhelming amount of examples of free speech restrictions.

Many of our students that participate in our Young Americans for Freedom chapters across the country have experienced situations on their respective campuses where the administration or other student groups have tried to restrict their rights.  YAF put together a list of our 2013 Top Ten Politically Correct Offenses on Campus, to shed light on some of the ridiculousness occurring across the country on school grounds.

As we near the joyous Christmas season, it is stunning to see just how "politically correct" we have become as a society.  Many schools don't allow the word "Christmas" to be said, atheist displays go up in local communities, Christmas trees are called holiday trees, Christmas parties become holiday parties, and some organizations go as far as to keep "Christ" out of Christmas.  Everyone is entitled to his or her beliefs but making it a point to restrict the faith of Christians during their most cherished holiday is just wrong and a deliberate attack on religious freedom.

We at YAF ask you to remain vigilant in this fight against free speech and please notify us of any instances of your rights being violated on your school campuses.

    • FREEDOM OF SPEECH DOESNT APPLY TO PRIVATELY OWEN BUSINESS!!! ONLY THE US GOVERMENT READ THE EFFIN CONSTITUTION!! Does the First Amendment apply to private companies and organizations? No. The First Amendment applies to the government — to protect individuals from government censorship. While the text of the First Amendment says “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech,” it means that no federal, state or local government official can infringe on your free-speech rights. A private company is not a government or state and therefore generally is not subject to the requirements of the First Amendment.

    • God is looking down and shaking his head at your ridiculous opinions. If you work for a company and you represent them by default, you don't say stupid Shit. Period. The first Amendment doesn't apply here..... The worst part is people are stupid enough to believe your trash

    • Freedom of speech means I can quote or paraphrase the Bible without restriction, which I understand Phil was doing in his interview. He believes what he was saying, and anyone who says he believes the Bible better check into it, too. Maybe they don't know what God's word says, or what they claim to believe. Putting Phil down is not going to change what God told the Jews, or what Christ said! The Bible also says we will have to stand before Christ, and be judged for our works.

    • As was mentioned before, Phil has the freedom to say what he wants -stupid or not. His employer can fire him if he is seen as a detriment to the company. Free enterprise in America is alive and well despite what Conservatives say about President Obama's leadership. Removal of public figures for things they've said that the employer dislikes has occurred for a long time and to public figures on the Right and the Left (and even in the middle).
