This weekend, because of attacks by intolerant liberal administrators at Fordham University, the campus conservative club rescinded their invitation to host Young America’s Foundation lecturer and bestselling author Ann Coulter. You can read the club's full apology at Salon.com. Below is an excerpt:

We regret that we failed to thoroughly research her before announcing; that is our error and we do not excuse ourselves for it. Consistent with our strong disagreement with certain comments by Ms. Coulter, we have chosen to cancel the event and rescind Ms. Coulter’s invitation to speak at Fordham. We made this choice freely before Father McShane’s email was sent out and we became aware of his feelings – had the President simply reached out to us before releasing his statement, he would have learned that the event was being cancelled. We hope the University community will forgive the College Republicans for our error and continue to allow us to serve as its main voice of the sensible, compassionate, and conservative political movement that we strive to be. We fell short of that standard this time, and we offer our sincere apologies.

It is a shame that some of the club’s leadership felt compelled to quickly send out this apology and cancel the event. In fact, several members of the club’s leadership—including Emily Harman, the club’s vice president, and longtime Foundation activist and the current secretary John Mantia—did not want the club to apologize.

Additionally, while he eagerly lambasted the club for wanting to host Ann Coulter, the University’s president failed to draw attention to the hateful attacks some of the club members faced leading up to the now-cancelled event. One club member, Christina Marquis, was called a “racist” by a Fordham graduate first on the Facebook event page for the Coulter lecture, then a Tumblr blog was created attacking her. Both have since been taken down, but we have received screen shots.

Will the school president address this intolerant atmosphere towards conservative students on campus? Will he require those who bullied the conservatives to take free speech sensitivity training?

Before the Fordham President and other liberals denounce conservatives and call for “civility,” they should take a closer look at the raging hate-mongers on the Left. As the president stated himself, “[W]e are called upon to deal with one another with civility and compassion, not to sling mud and impugn the motives of those with whom we disagree or to engage in racial or social stereotyping.” It’s time for college administrators to live up to their own words.

    • It's very sad that the liberals will not give non-liberals a chance to express their views. On the other hand, Conservatives are always tolerant of other views and do not stop liberal speakers from appearing and do not walk out on or heckle liberal speakers. It's an ignorant mentality on the part of liberals - the Alinsky Rules for Radicals mentality.

    • So glad to see this here. The barrage of attacks against the club and against conservative individuals, myself included as you can see above, is disgusting. If anything needs to be spoken out against by the administration, it is the intolerance that is so present on the Fordham campus.

    • The immediate outcry I saw upon the group's announcement was a bit ridiculous. While the opposition had every right to protest and complain, the hostility shown wasn't right, and it was as if these people were waiting for something to erupt over. It wasn't just people voicing their opinions; I was invited to the "Disinvite Ann Coulter from Fordham" event. It was as if they were trying to drag more and more people into this debate who didn't even want to be in the middle of it.

    • Obviously, the boost of adrenaline provided by the re-election of a liberal President emboldened liberals on campus to be poor winners.

    • I'm so happy they rescinded their invitation to that hatemonger Ann Coulter. I'm also so happy that Obama won again, and that all of you are so upset about it. The Republican party is so far right these days that being a moderate isn't possible. The rest of the party disowns you for being too far left if you support such un-American ideas as "equality" and "freedom of choice". Hopefully us Democrats keep winning elections so we can continue moving forward as a country instead of backwards.

    • To give liberals or non-liberals any overarching label is a perfect example of ignorance on anyone's part. Of course examples can be found at Fordham of anti-conservative views (and the other way around), but Fordham, as explained by the university president, does its part to ensure that all views are treated fairly and respectfully when dealing with official university matters. To prevent students from organizing themselves in any way, though, would be a clear breach of rights. So why don't we all just stop generalizing the views of the liberals and the conservatives? Ann Coulter was not supported by the Fordham administration because of her self-admittedly hateful and incendiary viewpoints. Which side of the political spectrum she fell on was not an issue. I agree that there should not be intolerance toward conservatives, especially in a university setting. But at the same time, there should be no promotion of the intolerance towards women, gays, or minorities which speakers such as Ann Coulter embody.

    • Fordham's President, Father McShane, actually refused to disallow Coulter from appearing - emphasizing it was the Conservative club's right to bring her in. Instead of taking executive action, he chose to articulate his dismay with their choice (given Coulter's history of bigoted sound bites). Given the mission of the school and the flux of bigotry-related incidents from last year I hardly find that "bullying" from the administration. Bias Incidents: http://www.wnyc.org/blogs/wnyc-news-blog/2012/mar/04/fordham-university-confronts-series-bias-incidents/ Furthermore, the apology from the Conservative club was not asked for by the administration, it was freely given. It is no one's fault but their own if the club's student leadership was divided. I personally would have loved to see Ann Coulter come to campus. She provides a unique conservative perspective that should be heard. That being said, let's stick to the facts - something we usually hang our hat on. Leave the whining to the left...Fordham's administration handled this as they should have unless I'm missing something.

    • you guys dont get it... its not because we're conservative or liberal or whatever. last year we had a huge issue with hate speech and ann coulter is quite known for her hate speech. i personally would have gone and listened to her, although i may not agree with everything. the point was that we do not want negativity on campus after all the things we went through last year

    • It's the liberal mentality, the you-can-believe-whatever-you'd-like-as-long-as-you-agree-with-me type of thinking, that sparks much of the uncivil discourse on campus. When faced with facts or a spirited debate partner, these kids switch right to the ad-hominim, "you're so stupid" argument.

    • Let me get this straight -- Fordham is to blame for something Fordham did not post and is longer online? YAF, why are you so desperate to be victims of Fordham, when this issue has nothing to do with you or Fordham? Fordham allowed Coulter to speak, the College Republicans uninvited her! Get your facts straight. Fordham did not post anything about Ms. Marquis. Please stop with your paranoia. Find something productive to do. Why all the attacks on Christian colleges lately? Is it now conservative to attack Christian institutions? You guys have no conservative credentials.

    • I think there's a logical step missing here--did Christina Marquis say or do something racist? Maybe she is one. That would render the blog less hateful and more informative, no?

    • Liberals call anyone who doesn't agree with them racist. It is really old. And Childish. This is our progressive tolerant party? Ha!

    • As a conservative, it makes me sick to see the Campus conservatives capitulate to ad hominem attacks with obsequious apologies for doing nothing but offering a Ann Coulter a chance to express her views on campus. While Saul Alinsky, Noam Chomsky, Bill Maher, Al Franken, Nancy Pelosi, Edward Said, Gore Vidal, or any other liberal thinker, advocate, or commentator, would be welcomed onto campuses by all, conservatives like Ann have to be subjected to hate speech, suppression of free speech, and a dereliction of principles by those (the campus conservatives) who are supposed to, at a minimum, offer a forum to explicate her views. I wish Fordham's campus had more conservatives willing to at least allow a conservative to speak on their campus. After all, what good is a University if it disallows freedom of thought and expressions of ideas? Kudos to Christina Marquis who at least showed some conviction. Wear your "racism" badge like it's a badge of courage girl. If they have to resort to ad hominem nonsense, your doing your job. They no longer have an argument worthy of uttering. Convince your compatriots at Fordham to grow a sack. Please. Your Fellow New Yorker, Benjamin R. Long Ben Long

    • Coulter has her agenda which is Romney. Yeah Ann, he's some cvsneroative, huh? Laughable. You lost alot of respect credibility with Conservatives by supporting this poser. Newt is the man, sorry Ann. Romney is the Dole, the McCain-don't you get it? George H.W. Bush came out today supporting Romney. Doesn't that give you any clue Ann? No. Just spouts the Romney line. Christie is campaigning for VP. With her factually incorrect barrage against Newt, Bachmann is running for Mitt's VP, too!
